Current release status

The “Mortal Shell 2” wording is the common search name; the official title is Mortal Shell II. Playstack confirmed a simultaneous worldwide digital launch on August 20, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The Steam store now marks the game as released and identifies Cold Symmetry as developer and Playstack as publisher.

The current console product pages agree. PlayStation lists a PS5 version, while Xbox lists an August 20, 2026 release and play on Xbox Series X|S. This cross-platform agreement removes the ambiguity found in outdated previews and old placeholder dates.

Is the game out now?

Yes. The launch date has passed, so old articles describing the game as upcoming are outdated.

The Xbox page gives the same launch date and identifies a Series X|S-optimized, single-player release with cloud saves. The PlayStation page lists one-player offline play and PS5 Pro Enhanced support. These are platform details attached to the released game, not separate release dates.

Playstack called the launch simultaneous and worldwide across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. A storefront may display the earlier Devout entitlement date because that edition included up to 72 hours of advance access. That does not move the general release date from August 20.

What happened to early access?

There was no ongoing Steam Early Access release. A limited Steam Beta ran before launch, while the Devout Edition offered up to 72 hours of advance access. Both were temporary pre-launch programs. Anyone buying now receives the released game, subject to the edition and regional availability shown by the store.

“Early access” is overloaded in search results. Steam Early Access is a long-running development program with a dedicated store label. Devout advance access was a short preorder benefit. The open beta was a limited test. None of those descriptions is the current release stage.

If an old page says “coming in 2026,” “wishlist now,” or “play the beta,” check its publication date. The live Steam page now uses a released status and an August 20 date.

Platforms and versions

The confirmed launch platforms are:

  • Windows PC through Steam;
  • PlayStation 5;
  • Xbox Series X|S.

The official sources used here do not announce PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, macOS, or Linux versions. Steam lists Windows support. Do not convert compatibility layers, remote streaming, or the first game's platform list into an official sequel release.

The title is a standalone sequel. A player does not need to buy Mortal Shell (2020) to launch it, and owning the first game does not establish an upgrade entitlement for the sequel. The shared setting and mechanics are narrative context, not a cross-buy program.

Digital availability and editions

Playstack announced a digital worldwide launch. The Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox pages each offer a storefront purchase. The sources used here do not establish a physical-disc edition, so do not promise one without a current retailer or publisher announcement.

Standard includes the full game. Devout includes the full game and eight Obsidian Shell skins; its early-play window has ended. The PlayStation and Xbox pages currently present both editions, with live regional prices.

Subscription availability is separate from release availability. Xbox can sell a released game without including it in Game Pass. The Game Pass status page checks the current catalog rather than inferring access from the Xbox release.

What launched

Steam describes Mortal Shell II as a standalone action RPG built around eight warrior Shells, melee and ranged weapon upgrades, unrestricted stamina-free combat, and free exploration through a compact interconnected open world. Xbox's description adds more than 80 dungeons and the objective of recovering the Undermether's stolen eggs.

Those facts help distinguish the full release from the open beta. The beta represented only part of the game and should not be used to describe the complete world, final balance, or current performance.

Regional time and storefront differences

The publisher gives a worldwide date rather than a precise timezone-by-timezone unlock table. Store purchase pages may record entitlement dates differently, especially for Devout advance access. When verifying an old launch problem, record the platform, edition, region, account timezone, and the timestamp shown by the storefront.

Now that launch has passed, regional unlock time is no longer a buying obstacle. The relevant live questions are whether the product is sold in the account region, which edition is selected, and whether a subscription or discount applies.

Patch state after release

The date page answers when the game launched, not whether the installed copy is current. PC and console patches can arrive on different schedules. Before following a build guide, check the in-game version and the patch notes hub. A launch review can remain useful while its balance or performance observations become outdated.

The release date itself is immutable; patch dates, review totals, pricing, and catalog status are not. That is why this page separates the permanent timeline from live store data.

Before you buy

Check the storefront for your region rather than relying on an old countdown or preorder article. PC players should also compare their hardware with the official system requirements. Console players can review the confirmed PS5 features or the current Game Pass status.

Before checkout:

  1. Match the official title “Mortal Shell II,” not the first game.
  2. Confirm the platform is Steam/Windows, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S.
  3. Compare Standard with Devout by current contents and price.
  4. Check system requirements on PC or storage and account region on console.
  5. Let the current patch install before beginning a long save.
  6. Treat subscription access, cloud streaming, and cloud saves as separate platform features.

The release facts on this page were rechecked on September 3, 2026. Prices, discounts, subscriptions, review totals, and store availability can change even though the August 20 launch date cannot.

How to identify the current build

The launch date does not identify the patch installed on a console or PC. Before following a guide, open the platform's update history or the game's visible version label and compare it with the guide's verification date. A page written from Devout advance access can describe behavior that was changed before or after the worldwide launch.

When reporting a release-state discrepancy, include the storefront, region, edition, displayed availability, and date. Separate a delayed regional unlock from an installation failure, an entitlement problem, or a later patch bug. The product being released does not guarantee that every network, account, or save issue is caused by launch timing. This distinction keeps permanent release facts from being rewritten whenever a live service or regional store has a temporary problem.

For archived evidence, preserve the official announcement URL as well as the live store page; each proves a different part of the timeline.
