Verify each unlock type

“Skin” is the common search term, but Mortal Shell II calls these appearances Shades. The current specialist guide describes them as purely aesthetic: they change how a Shell or the Harbinger looks and do not add damage, defense, abilities, or progression advantages. Source 3GamesRadar Mortal Shell II Shades guideOpen source If a build changes after equipping one, check the Shell, Tarstones, equipment, and patch before attributing the change to the cosmetic.
There are three documented acquisition families:
| Shade source | Who it applies to | How it is obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian set | All eight playable Shells | Devout Edition or compatible edition upgrade |
| Blackmarrow chest Shades | Individual unlocked Shells | Find a Blackmarrow Key and open that Shell's chest in Marrow Keep |
| Flayed Harbinger | Harbinger | Beta participation reward described by the current guide |
The Week 1 Update also says two cosmetic rewards were added to the world after certain questlines. Source 4The Week 1 UpdateOpen source The patch text used here does not name those rewards or merge them into one of the three groups, so they remain a separate verified addition with an unlisted route.
Two different unlock sources
The Devout Edition includes eight Obsidian Shell skins, one for each playable Shell. Source 2Official Devout Edition announcementOpen source These are paid edition cosmetics, not evidence that a player missed eight ordinary world pickups.
The official Playstack announcement describes the Devout Edition as including eight Obsidian Shell skins. It originally paired that pack with up to 72 hours of advance access before the worldwide August 20 launch. Source 2Official Devout Edition announcementOpen source Advance access has ended; the durable edition benefit is the cosmetic set.
An Obsidian Shade may not be visible for a Shell that has not yet been found. Unlock the Shell, rest at a Beacon, select that Shell, and check its appearance options. This is different from finding a key or opening a world chest.
Other Shades are found through in-game secrets and interactions. The current specialist guide tracks these separately, but the list is still developing. Check the cosmetic menu for the exact Shell and Shade name after completing a route.
Unlocking Blackmarrow Shades
Blackmarrow Keys open Shell-specific chests in the elevator room at Marrow Keep. The specialist guide reports eight keys and eight chests, one for each playable Shell. Source 3GamesRadar Mortal Shell II Shades guideOpen source A chest cannot be used for a Shell that is not yet unlocked, but you should still verify the chest association before spending a key.
The same source currently documents six key locations rather than a complete eight-route list:
- the Desolate Ruins dungeon reached through the secret area at Marrow Keep;
- the Child's Feeding Ground Beacon;
- behind the Ova at Conquered Temple Beacon;
- beneath the tower near Sester's Abbey;
- the Abandoned Outpost merchant while Night Mode is active;
- the Shrine of Sorrows dungeon while Night Mode is active. Source 3GamesRadar Mortal Shell II Shades guideOpen source
Do not invent the two missing routes or use a comment without a reproducible landmark. The Blackmarrow Key guide maintains the known list, secret-room steps, Night Mode warning, and a key-spending ledger.
After opening a chest, rest at any Beacon and select the corresponding Shell's Shade. Write down which key source funded which chest. A global “six keys found” note will not identify the missing Shell when only one cosmetic remains.
Claiming the Flayed Harbinger reward
The GamesRadar guide describes Flayed Harbinger as a reward for players who participated in the beta for at least 30 minutes. Source 3GamesRadar Mortal Shell II Shades guideOpen source This is an account or entitlement-style reward, not a Blackmarrow chest and not part of the Devout Obsidian set.
If the reward should be present, use the same platform account that played the beta, confirm the full game is connected to that account, and inspect the Harbinger's Shade selector after resting. Do not expect it in a Shell's cosmetic list. Platform entitlement synchronization can take a restart; avoid deleting a save or repurchasing an edition as a first troubleshooting step.
Equipping and comparing Shades
Rest at a Beacon, choose the Harbinger or an unlocked Shell, and open the Shade selector. Preview one appearance at a time and return to gameplay under neutral lighting before judging color or surface detail. Dark interiors can make two variants look identical, while bright snow or firelight can exaggerate the difference.
Changing a Shade should not alter:
- Shell statistics or skill-tree progress;
- weapon, sidearm, or Tarstone compatibility;
- inventory, quest, or map state;
- trophy eligibility;
- combat damage or status buildup.
If one of those values changes, capture the before-and-after screens and report it as a possible bug. The cosmetic guide's evidence supports appearance only. Source 3GamesRadar Mortal Shell II Shades guideOpen source
Troubleshooting an unlock
- Confirm that the guide names the same Shell and Shade shown in your menu.
- Check whether the requirement is a Devout bonus, a Blackmarrow Key coffin, a quest, or another secret.
- Return to a Beacon or title screen so the inventory state refreshes.
- Check current patch notes before repeating a long route.
For Devout content, confirm that the installed add-on or edition upgrade belongs to the same platform, account, and region as the base game. The PlayStation product structure, for example, lists the Devout upgrade as a separate add-on. A license on one storefront does not transfer to Steam or Xbox.
For a Blackmarrow reward, confirm that the key count decreased, the intended chest opened, and the corresponding Shell is unlocked. For a Night Mode key source, confirm Night was active at the merchant or dungeon. For the beta reward, confirm the same platform account participated for the required time described by the guide.
If all conditions match and the Shade remains absent, restart the game once and recheck the Beacon menu. Preserve the save and capture the platform, edition, patch version, Shell, expected Shade, and completed route before filing a report. That information is more useful than repeating the unlock or opening another chest.
Edition and purchase decision
Buy or upgrade to Devout only if the eight Obsidian appearances justify the current price difference. The official description does not attach new missions, weapons, Shells, stats, or abilities to the set. Source 2Official Devout Edition announcementOpen source Players who prefer discoverable cosmetics can remain on Standard and pursue the Blackmarrow and quest routes.
Check the current storefront rather than an old launch article. The historical advance-access benefit cannot be recovered after release, and regional prices or upgrade availability can change. Use the Devout Edition comparison for the current distinction.
Update policy
New cosmetics should be added only with an exact name, associated Shell or Harbinger, acquisition method, platform limitations, and current source. A patch saying that cosmetics were added is enough to record the existence of new rewards, but not enough to publish a route or name. The Week 1 source is therefore cited for the two questline rewards without guessing their identities. Source 4The Week 1 UpdateOpen source
The Blackmarrow Key guide covers one secret-room and coffin path. The Devout Edition page explains the paid Obsidian set and current upgrade considerations.
Shades are cosmetic. No official edition description or current specialist guide used here assigns them new stats, abilities, or progression advantages. This page was rechecked on September 3, 2026; future additions must be sourced and labeled by unlock type.
For a complete cosmetic record, capture the Shade name and preview on the same Shell before changing selections; similar dark palettes are otherwise easy to misidentify later.
