Verify the correct lock
If a door does not prompt for it, mark the location and continue exploring; key names are deliberate. Because community pages are still being updated after launch, verify the route against your current patch before treating a screenshot as exact. Source 1Fextralife Chapel Key referenceOpen source
The Chapel Key has one clear job: it opens the tower entrance to the Shrine of Trials near Mushroom Village. It does not unlock the Hall of Echoes, Blackmarrow coffins, or an arbitrary door that happens to look religious. Separating the pickup from the destination before you travel prevents the common mistake of testing the right key at the wrong tower.
Use a four-part note: pickup Beacon, pickup landmark, destination Beacon, and dungeon reward. For this route those fields are Mushroom Village area, illusory stone arch and hanging rope, Mushroom Village Beacon return route, and Axe & Dagger. If any field in a video differs, compare its patch date and region labels before following it.
Where to find the key
Travel near Mushroom Village to the bonfire area surrounded by enemies. Pass through the illusory stone archway, approach the revealed statue, and interact with the hanging rope to receive the Chapel Key. GameSpot documents the same landmark sequence. Source 2GameSpot Chapel Key routeOpen source
Clear nearby enemies before interacting so the pickup can be confirmed in the inventory. If the archway appears ordinary, walk through it rather than looking for a separate switch.
The visual trick is the key to this pickup. The stone arch is an illusion that changes what is visible after the player crosses it. The cited GameSpot route says passing through reveals a large statue holding a rope; interacting with that rope produces the key. Source 2GameSpot Chapel Key routeOpen source Do not search the ground for a glowing loose item or assume the statue must be attacked.
Before leaving, open the inventory and confirm the exact item name. A screenshot of the statue is less useful than a screenshot showing both the local landmark and the Chapel Key entry. If the key is not in the inventory, cross the arch again and repeat the rope interaction after the nearby enemies are cleared.
Where to use it
Return to the Mushroom Village Beacon and take the route toward the Grisha Hunters and the caged baby Grisha. The key opens the nearby chapel or tower door leading into the Shrine of Trials. The dungeon route ultimately provides the Axe and Dagger reward described by the specialist guide.
Shrine of Trials walkthrough
The Shrine of Trials uses short puzzle rooms rather than a long combat gauntlet. In the first room, read the statue clue: “Gaze upon your king so true, back and back you shall pass through.” The solution is physical, not an inventory combination. Face the king statue and walk backward; the illusory wall behind the character should clear and reveal the route onward. Source 2GameSpot Chapel Key routeOpen source
In the second room, strike the two movable stone pedestals until each rests on its pressure plate. Check both plates before searching the walls. If the exit remains closed, one block may be touching the plate without being centered far enough to trigger it. Reset your angle, use controlled attacks, and avoid pushing a block into a corner where the camera hides its alignment.
The final room contains a Spear Knight. Defeat it to claim Axe & Dagger. The dungeon is complete when the weapon is registered, not merely when the enemy dies.
| Stage | Required action | Confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup illusion | Walk through the stone arch | Statue and hanging rope become visible |
| Key pickup | Pull the hanging rope | Chapel Key appears in inventory |
| First trial | Face the king and walk backward | Hidden wall opens |
| Second trial | Move both pedestals onto plates | Final room opens |
| Final trial | Defeat the Spear Knight | Axe & Dagger is awarded |
Safe route and preparation
Start from Mushroom Village Beacon with low carried Gloom, a usable healing supply, and a weapon that can control a single armored opponent. The pickup area and destination both contain enemies, so separating the route into two trips is safer than solving the illusion and dungeon while protecting a large resource stack.
After collecting the key, rest if needed, then take the left-side route from Mushroom Village toward the Grisha Hunters and the caged baby Grisha. The tower entrance is nearby. Source 2GameSpot Chapel Key routeOpen source If the landmarks stop matching, return to the Beacon and restart rather than continuing into an unrelated branch.
Freeing the caged creature and entering the tower are separate interactions. Do not assume that completing one automatically unlocks the other. Watch for the explicit door prompt that names the Chapel Key.
Troubleshooting the Chapel Key
If the rope does not grant the key, check whether it was already collected, whether the prompt fully completed, and whether the item is in a key-item category rather than the ordinary inventory list. Resting at a Beacon or reloading can refresh an interaction, but preserve the current save before attempting any unusual workaround.
If the tower does not accept the key, confirm that you are at the Shrine of Trials entrance near Mushroom Village. The Hall of Echoes uses the Crypt Key, while the hub cosmetic coffins use Blackmarrow Keys. A missing prompt usually indicates the wrong object or a completed door, not a need to consume the key manually.
If the first puzzle wall remains solid, face the king statue and move backward rather than turning around. If the pressure-plate room remains locked, inspect both blocks from the side and look for a gap between a block and the active center of its plate. For the Spear Knight, use the first attempt to learn reach and recovery instead of trading hits in the narrow room.
Why this route is worth completing
The reward is a full primary weapon, not a disposable consumable. Axe & Dagger combines two attack profiles and is one of the weapons that can pair with the Duality Stone's repeated light attacks. The dungeon therefore matters to weapon-roster completion and to players comparing fast dual-wield builds.
Do not describe the Chapel Key itself as a weapon upgrade. It is access to a dungeon whose final encounter awards the weapon. That distinction matters when checking whether a missing reward is an inventory problem, a puzzle-state problem, or an unfinished fight.
If the door does not accept the key, verify the item name and inventory state. The Crypt Key and Blackmarrow Key open different routes. Use the map guide to record the Mushroom Village Beacon and return path.
The route, puzzle sequence, and reward were rechecked against the cited specialist guides on September 3, 2026. Future changes should be added only after the same pickup, door, and reward are verified on the newer build.
Efficient cleanup record
On a completion run, save three pieces of proof: the hidden rope pickup, the Shrine of Trials door after the key is accepted, and the final Axe & Dagger reward. Label each image with the nearest Beacon and patch. This separates a missing-key report from an unfinished puzzle or a defeated boss whose reward did not register. It also prevents the Chapel route from being confused with the Hall of Echoes when several locked dungeons are revisited late in the same save.
